Best Design Awards Gold Winner – Spatial Design (Offices & Workplace Environments)
Metropolis Office is an award-winning workplace interior located within Auckland's historic Magistrates Courthouse, originally constructed in 1893. Designed for Richards Partners, the project transforms a remarkable heritage building into a contemporary atelier for strategy, collaboration and client engagement.
The design sought to create a workplace that feels more like a private apartment than a conventional office. A series of calm, flexible spaces support collaboration while maintaining moments of privacy, reflection and focused work. Contemporary insertions sit comfortably within the existing heritage fabric, allowing the original architecture to remain the defining character of the project.
Authentic materials and traditional craftsmanship were fundamental to the outcome. Hand-welded steel and glass screens, restored stone floors, reinstated heritage detailing and carefully selected furnishings create a refined balance between old and new. Large arched windows, natural light and layered textures contribute to an environment that evolves throughout the day.
Developed through a highly collaborative process with the client, designers and specialist craftspeople, Metropolis Office demonstrates how thoughtful interior architecture can revitalise significant heritage buildings while creating inspiring contemporary workplaces.
